Program Description:

Uganda may well be the friendliest country you will ever visit!  The warmth and hospitality of its people are reknowned.  It's hard to believe given the country's history.  But since 1986, Uganda has been politically stable and has undergone dramatic economic growth.  Still, outside of Kampala, electricity and running water remain a luxury.  ELI bases its programs in Iganga, about three hours east of the capital. The road to Iganga takes you through lush forest reserves, tea plantations and across the Nile River just a short distance from its source in Lake Victoria.  The main highway from Kampala to Nairobi passes through Iganga, giving the false impression that the town itself is teeming with traffic.  But once you leave the highway, cars and trucks are few and far between, and the simplicity of small town Ugandan life surrounds you.

Uganda has much to offer.  Besides the Nile and Lake Victoria, Uganda has a number of world-class national parks and game reserves, savannahs, tall mountains and the breathtaking Murchison Falls.  You're also just a short flight from neighboring Kenya.  If you're looking for a place that is scenic, the people are welcoming, and the need for your help is great, Uganda is the place for you.

ELI offers internship projects in the Iganga district of Uganda. Based in Iganga Town, projects are only 3 hours from the capital, Kampala, and offer the unforgettable experience small-town Ugandan life while learning first hand about day to day concerns in international development.

Income Generation and Small Business Development

Participants in this project will work directly with small village organizations to help facilitate the development of small businesses in rural areas. Interns can pursue a wide variety of projects in collaboration with the local organization including business skills development, microloans, developing business plans, and project monitoring and evaluation. This internship is an incredible opportunity to learn firsthand about small scale economic development projects while also playing a role in poverty reduction in rural Uganda. This project requires interns to be creative self starters who are open to learning about and understanding cultural differences.
