Nepal is a small, beautiful country, famous for the majestic Himalayas, beautiful landscapes,

rich cultural diversity, and traditionally peaceful people. This country has long been a

popular destination for visitors, explorers, and nature lovers. In spite of these natural

blessings, Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. With a family per capita

income of less than $270 per year, most Nepalese live below the poverty line. It is estimated

that hundreds of thousands of Nepali people, especially women and children, suffer

unnecessarily due to a lack of basic medical care. Different efforts have been made

through governmental organizations to improve the deteriorating situation, but the

villages of Nepal show very few signs of relief and development.

ELI offers a number of opportunities in Nepal for

pre-medical students and experienced relief workers

who would like to help out. Visits range from a

quick two week trip to an in-depth five month

immersion program. A coordinator from our office

in Nepal will greet you at the airport and help you

get settled. Your first few days are devoted to

exploring Nepal's natural beauty and visiting

revered cultural and historical sights with an ELI

coordinator, including the historic towns of

Working at a hospital is an opportunity to provide a much needed service and learn firsthand

about healthcare in a third world country. Typically, participants spend 6-8 hours a

day at one of three locations: a small private hospital, a medium-sized private hospital, or a

large state-run pediatrics hospital. Participants often help out with free health clinics in the

country as well. The program usually entails shadowing a doctor in the morning and helping

the staff/focusing on patient care in the afternoon. Clinical experience is helpful, but

not necessary. Participants have evenings and weekends free to explore.

Kirtipur and Bahktapur, Changu Narayan Temple,

Pashupatinath, and the neighborhood in which you

will be living and working. Our coordinators are

proud to share the beauty of the Himalayas and the

complex cultural diversity of their home. This program

includes a homestay– offering the warm comforts

of a happy home, immersing you in the culture,

and providing traditional Nepali meals.

smaller and private, it is not as overwhelmingly busy as I had imagined it would be. In many ways this works

to my advantage because the doctors have more time to chat with me by sharing their knowledge and

preparing me prior to beginning any symptomology diagnosing or treatment. My internship has proven to be

very hands-on so far, the wide array of experiences I have already gained and the treatments I have been
