Program Description:

Welcome to South Africa!

Famous for its sparkling white sand beaches, diverse African wildlife, exciting outdoor sports and multicultural population, South Africa is a colorful country brimming with excitement and adventure.

ELI's program is based in beautiful Cape Town, located on a small peninsula that juts from the southern tip of South Africa into the Atlantic Ocean. It is an urban center, and the central business district buzzes with life at foot of Table Mountain. The city is full of the well-preserved historical buildings, busy streets, world class shopping and restaurants.

SOLAR ENGINEERING

This 20 year old solar water heating company that has been in the forefront of innovative product design and development. The company is currently undergoing major re-structuring and turn around and has the ability to offer internships in a technical or business environment   The field of work would either be in the development of new low cost technology in the thermal solar heating and cooling environment or business development, marketing or business process depending on line of study.  Fields of study could include energy engineering for technical engineering type internships or Business process and marketing studies for business related internships. Maybe even finance to develop new financing model for solar water heating applications in emerging markets.  Own transport necessary.


CIVIL OR STEEL CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING

One of the companies ELI works with was the first independent, privately-owned company in South Africa and the first company in Cape Town to install STRUCAD, a 3D detailing package.  Its advantages over conventional manual detailing are great e.g. elimination of all detailing errors, the system checks for clashes, unconnected parts, bolt clashes etc. and offering a great reduction in  detailing time.


The client list of this firm includes some of the largest construction companies in and around the country.  As an intern, you will both work on site and in their offices.  Tasks will include structural steel detailing, fabrication, erection and project management.  You will probably work together with a local engineering student in a team and get excellent opportunities to work for an excellent company.  This internship is mainly for senior students. Own transport advisable.

YACHT BUILDING COMPANY

This is one of the largest yacht builders in the country. They have a good reputation world-wide and product luxury yachts for clients from around the world.
 

Tasks will be allocated according to your background, interests and skills.  This firm can take interns in boat designing, cost accounting & financial systems, general administration, international marketing fields related to the maritime industry.  It is a predominantly male environment and it is likely that male interns would suit them better. Interns should firstly have an interest in the maritime industry to appreciate a large ship building firm. The intern should have a good command of English and should be able to write and speak English fluently.


MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FIRM

This small engineering company focusing mainly on the design and building of machines for material handling, food processing and bakery equipment. Established in 1963, they are experienced in their field and are currently exporting to several Sub-Saharan countries, as well as Russia, Malaysia and the Philippines.


They are especially interested in creative minded people who can initiate their own ideas and transfer them into a working reality  -  as many of our student have in the past. Thorsten, a previous student for example, was given total freedom of expression to create and design a pineapple pealing machine from its first CAD draft to its completion. Following his example, depending on the duration of your internship and your qualifications, you would be given similar tasks to initiate and complete.


WATER & WASTE WATER ENGINERING

A multidisciplinary consulting engineering company looking for senior interns. Current projects include water and waste water treatment, structures, security systems, loco engine testing facility, property development, Water and waste water treatment works and site inspections. Progress meetings, minutes, investigations, analysis, problem solving are tasks for the intern as well as concepts design, proposals, costing, site instructions, certifications of repairs, maintenance and operations. Project Management knowledge of water and waste water systems, Innovative thinking. Analysis, conceptualization problem solving all requirements for this internship.  The firm has a smaller office in Cape Town, but offers excellent internship opportunities.


WATER & WASTE WATER, CIVIL OR STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

As one of the largest and most successful Consulting Engineering firms in Southern Africa, this firm is an established leader in the engineering profession. Sought after for their expertise in a wide range of fields, they provide a comprehensive consulting service in civil, structural and environmental engineering. The Intern can gain experience in the fields of Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Management, Public participation, Environmental law, as well as environmental engineering or alternatively apply for internships in civil or structural engineering.  The intern will assist with environmental reports and be involved of projects such as proposed water supply projects for the City of CT or related fields. Any related study field may apply, but with the precondition that the applicant must have a good command of English.   They normally prefer more senior students.


ADMINISTRATION, HR, IT, FINANCE IN AN ENGINEERING FIRM

This company has established itself as a market leader in the steel industry and its associated lines of business. The Group has grown to be the largest privately owned steel mill in South Africa with some 2400 workers. They now control the steel manufacturing from raw materials to final product. Only South African steel is used and this guarantees a very high quality steel at a constant grade.  This means that they are well placed to serve both national and international markets. Tasks would depend on the current needs of the company and also the study field of the intern. 


Currently they need assistance in breaking larger financial departments into smaller measurable units.  They also have a need to do factory floor planning/layout, time management studies, production scheduling, develop incentive schemes for staff, quality management studies, planning software, the development of incentive schemes for sales staff so that they can move from fixed packages to commission remunerations schemes, feasibility studies on the outsourcing of logistical facilities compared to in-house operations as well as consulting to the management of the company. Computer Skills, Financial qualifications, International Marketing, Productivity, Warehousing, Logistics, Industrial Engineering, with study fields like work flow are some of the fields that can be offered by this firm.


This is an excellent internship firm for senior students. Having your own transportation is recommended.


MECHANICAL ENGINEERING & MACHINE DESIGNING

This firm holds a respected market position in Southern Africa, specialising in the design, manufacture and distribution of fans to the industrial, mining, power generation and HVAC sectors. This is a huge firm in the designing and maintenance of new products, industrial fans and machinery, and has a manufacturing plant occupying an area of 16000m².  The innovation and production of quality products that can withstand the rigours of modern industrial duty has been an essential building block in the success of their products.

Their quality control department establishes and maintains quality systems and procedures in accordance with ISO9001 guidelines.  Interns with mechanical engineering and especially designing skills, quality management, industrial engineering, etc. could apply.


FEES
Program Fee: $695

 

HOUSING

Generally in shared apartments with other interns.  Cost: US$250-$350 per month

 

The program fee is a onetime fee that remains the same no matter how long you decide to participate.  Includes airport pickup, orientation, ongoing 24/7 in-country support.  Activities arranged with other interns.

The field of Engineering is only for interns or working people wanting an experience in a foreign country.  Most companies prefer a more senior student and require that they stay there for a minimum of 3 months to ensure that they are properly integrated into the firm and its work.
