Program Description:
ELI offers opportunities in a variety of hospitals and clinics in and around Chennai and Madurai. You can request to work in a general care facility providing care for the underserved poor, or you can shadow doctors in a state-of-the-art western style hospital. Sankara Nethralaya is an organization devoted to ophthalmologic health. Sankara was founded in 1978, and since then has been described as “The best charitable organization in India”. Among Sankara’s main activities are outreach programs in rural villages throughout India. In India, close to 80% of people with vision problems suffer from cataracts. The villagers are screened for cataracts, diseases, and other vision problems. Once the villagers requiring surgery are determined, they are taken by bus to have surgery performed. Everyday, doctors at Sankara perform an average of 100 free cataract surgeries. Sankara also funds a clinic that provides general medical care to the poor. Gremaltes is a hospital founded in the 1970s by a German foundation with the goal of working to eliminate Leprosy in India. In 1981, the incidence of leprosy in India was 57.6 cases per 10,000. Since then, the incidence has dropped to 3.5 cases per 10,000. Gremaltes also provides general care to the poor, especially focusing on communicable diseases. Gremaltes has been very active in the fight against HIV/AIDS, providing free HIV testing to sex workers and leading several very active hygiene programs. This is an ideal placement for anyone with an interest in health education and educational outreach programs. MIOT, The Madras Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology, is a cutting edge facility a few miles from the airport. MIOT was founded in 1994 and since then has become one of the premier Orthopedic and Trauma centers in India. MIOT has started welcoming patients from all over the world, becoming part of the growing trend of “medical tourism”. Despite its reputation for a high level of service, MIOT has been true to the ideal of medicine and constantly gives back to the community. MIOT has an air-conditioned free ward where poor patients can receive care free of charge in the same facilities as wealthy patients. MIOT also has a program that provides necessary surgery at no charge for the poorest patients. Interns at this placement must be medical school students. The Voluntary Health Service delivers a number of free medical services to the indigent. The projects include a program for 40 diabetic children who come in for daily blood checks and insulin injections; participation in Tamil Nadu’s AIDS Prevention and Control Project; eye camps to screen the poor for cataracts; blood donation drives; and many more. This placement requires some knowledge of the Tamil language. Christian Mission Hospital is a church-funded hospital providing care to the underserved poor in Madurai.
