Program Description:

Bishkek: Central Asian Studies

 

Central Asian Studies is an innovative program based in the fascinating region of Central Asia and combines intensive language or linguistics study with a range of regional studies courses.

The semester program looks at geopolitics, policy, and demographics while a robust travel component will complement your studies, giving you wider, fuller, first-hand, practical perspectives on the issues that interest you most. - Semester Courses (Spring/Fall) -

RUSS 193/293/393/403 Russian Language Study
Russian is a lingua franca for politics and business in Central Asia and thus forms the foundation for Central Asian Studies. Small, intensive classes focus on reading, writing, grammar, speaking, comprehension, and phonetics.

CA-371: The New Great Game
You will gain an overview of the New Great Game as a renewed struggle for hegemony and control over natural resources and geopolitical positioning in Central Asia between competing global powers, the Central Asian republics themselves, and neighboring states.
3 credits

CA-372: Understanding Central Asia
You will take a broad overview of the cultural, social, historical, and religious dimensions of Central Asia and Afghanistan. Attention is given to the media, civil society, gender, and religious environment in these countries.
