J-Term (III): Great Cities

  YOUR ASA EXPERIENCE
You will receive individualized support from ASA’s advisors and staff throughout your program application process, while you are abroad, and when you return. You will also receive a detailed pre-departure orientation guide which will help you know what to pack, what to expect when you arrive, and how to stay safe while abroad.

Once you arrive you will participate in our onsite orientation with the other ASA students in your group. ASA’s site director will introduce you to your host city and culture through orientation and multiple events during the program. Our intentionally small group sizes allow ASA’s students to get to know one another and are an aspect of our programs for which our alumni consistently express their appreciation. You will have opportunities to meet other students and lots of new people through your classes and social events.

ASA programs include excursions, housing, meals, cell phones, academic credits, transcripts, airport pick-up on arrival, medical insurance and more! Contact ASA or your advisor to learn about ASA’s Price Guarantee for all of our programs.
 COURSES
An exciting academic and cultural experience in Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Czech Republic that will explore the rise and establishment of the urban setting as the nexus of contemporary European culture and civilization.  This program will focus primarily on the artistic conception of the city from the late 19th century up to the contemporary, by observing and studying sites that have inspired artists from Petronius to Alexandre Dumas to Franz Kafka. Through literature, cinema, music and painting, students will take advantage of the physical settings in order to better understand the aesthetic, demographic and historical importance of these cities in their European context. Students will have the opportunity to learn from and exchange observations with experts from IAU College, as well as distinguished on-site scholars and local guides, in order to frame their own perception of the cities and their representation through the arts. At the end of this 3-week traveling seminar, students will better appreciate the interplay between the historical realities and fictional and/or imaginary perspectives of European cities.

Cities/Sites Visited: Rome, Paris, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille, Amsterdam, Prague.

Students on J-Term C will take the same interdisciplinary class and may earn 3 credits for one of the following courses, of their choosing:

European Studies 303: Europe and the Urban Space
Anthropology 301/501: The Artist and the City
Literature 375/575: The European City in Literature
Communications 375/575: The European City in the Visual Arts
Geography 201: Europe and its Cities
