Those who study with the School in Italy in Florence, Ferrara, or Rome are exceptional among U.S. students in Italy: they study in Italian—and speak it well. The School, founded in 1960, is among a tiny handful of study abroad programs in which students take all course work in Italian and can integrate into an Italian university. It therefore attracts students whom local university faculty praise for their academic seriousness and  enthusiasm for learning.

Since its founding in 753 B.C., Rome has been a center of culture, politics, religion, trade, and history. With a population of 2.7 million, Rome is a city that has learned to live in modernity while conserving its ancient history and architecture. Now a major European and international capital with several institutions of higher learning, students have the opportunity to study along with their Italian peers in a city with endless opportunities for learning and living.

Middlebury's host institution, the Università degli studi di Roma 1, "la Sapienza", was founded in 1303 and enrolls approximately 145,000 students. Students take courses across several disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and the arts.
