What do I do?

A variety of internship projects are available depending on your interests and the local organizations' needs. Areas of work include:

  • Culture tourism: Intern with local organization to develop / improve tourism programs in the region with the aim to benefit local communities, be economically viable, sustainable and promoting independence.
  • Revival and preservation of dying folk art: An exciting internship opportunity to work towards saving and popularizing the Pingurli arts, an age-old dying art form. Future plans include designing creating and marketing lifestyle products using traditional Pingurli art and craft in urban and international markets.
  • Women's empowerment: Volunteer with Women's Self-Help Group across the region that currently markets traditionally cooked food. The objective is empower local women's group through economic development.

Program Development and Evaluation: For those interested in getting work experience on the management side, can work with the staff on grant proposals, monitoring, evaluation and strategic planning and program development.

Visit nearby villages with the social workers and interact with self-help group members and artist's association. Gain valuable field experience working with the staff and then help with program management, strategy, program evaluation and monitoring. You could also work towards creating and marketing of lifestyle products for reviving and popularizing the ancient pingurli art form.

Students help the social workers with the documentation, office administration and analysis aspect of the work when they are not visiting the field. This way the students get to see ground realities and learn about development programs and give back back to the community and organization.

Even if you are young there are many ways to give back to the community. Past students have helped with data collection and analysis, report writing for foreign donors and project evaluation in addition to working in the field.

What's more, you are invited to explore the virgin territory of Sindhudurg dotted by an array of green villages with quaint red-roofed houses tucked away in coconut and areca nut groves, or mango orchards, long silvery beaches alongside deep blue seas, backwaters and a lagoon (at Mochemad) and picturesque verdant fields. This, yet unexplored territory, abounds in long virgin beaches, where, on a full moon night because of phosphorescence, waves glow in the dark, exuding a sense of rare tranquility. All this, while enjoying the hospitality and the richness of cultural heritage and traditions of rural India.
