Program Description:

The Hospitality Internship Program in located in a resort area (Spring Lake) of New Jersey, U.S.A.  Interns will undertake a full-time PAID ($1,000-1,300 per month) placement in a small quaint Inn/ Bed and Breakfast.  This is an excellent opportunity  to learn about hospitality management from the ground up, working alongside the owner of the property.  You will learn the reservation system, assist with website updates, and help with basic bookkeeping.  Some housekeeping is required along with working in the retail store when needed.  Essentially your role will be multifaceted and you will participate as an essential part of the staff at the Inn.

The Inn has Suites, Guest rooms, Private Cottages and a large Guest House on site.  It is located on a romantic salt water lake and is registered with the Spring Lake Historical Society as an historical site.  Vacationers come from all over to step back in time into a Victorian Era and relax on their wicker-filled porch, take canoe rides on the lake or visit the nearby beaches.  Nearby are lovely boutiques, fine dining, golf, tennis and boating.  Bikes, beach chairs and umbrellas are available for the asking.

Hospitality and Hotel Management

The internship will involve all aspects of hotel and hospitality management.  The internship is paid and has housing onsite.  The Inn is located in a resort area so the focus is on their website and reservations; helping at the retails store; assisting at the hotel and working with maid staff on housekeeping duties as well as assisting the guests.

STIPEND:

  • Fall, Winter and Spring: $1,000 ($300 deducted each month for housing).
  • Summer: $1,300 ($300 deducted each month for housing).
  • HOUSING: private room, use of kitchen area. Intern can cover all housing cost by house-sitting.

Specific objectives for the intern:

  • Assist with implementing new Reservation Software.
  • Reports - run housekeeping reports, revenue, and occupancy and tax reports. Learn how to Export financial data to QuickBooks.
  • Marketing - Customizing, tracking and reporting on a wide variety of options including referral sources and reasons for stay.

On-The-Job Training:

  • To understand guests needs. It is important to deal with public to understand this industry.
  • Trainee will benefit from learning the reservation system as well as how to deal directly with an International Guest.

Chronology or Syllabus of training tasks will be performed during this phase:

  • Trainee will deal directly with Guests
  • Handle check-in and check-out. Help with any questions or concerns a guest may have.
  • Trainee will also be responsible for Calendar and Guest Confirmations

Method of Evaluation and Frequency of Supervision:

  • Supervision of all tasks daily - check completion of all work. Feedback on a weekly basis provided.
  • Evaluation of the progress done monthly as a schedule review.

Eligibility
  • Minimum of 2 years Undergraduate Study Completed
  • Intermediate- or beginner level of English
  • Currently enrolled as a undergraduate or graduate student
  • Relevant academic background and/or work experience in desired field
  • Graduates must start no more than 12 months after their official graduation date OR must have 12 months work experience in their field.
  • Non-U.S. students will be required to apply for a special J-1 Visa.
