PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Belize: an English-speaking country in the heart of Central America, home to one of the greatest concentrations of bio-diversity on the planet, dotted with magnificent archaeological remnants of the Mayan people and populated by their descendants. But diversity in Belize doesn't end with its biological wonders, as you will discover for yourself by living among the people of Orange Walk on the CCSA Belize Anthropology Program.

By combining this intensive study abroad experience with course-specific directed study activities preceding and/or following the travel portion of the program, students may earn three semester hours of college credit.

PROGRAM COSTS

The price of the Belize Anthropology Program is $3495. This includes round-trip transportation from designated cities, airport transfers, internal transportation between program sites, accommodations, ISIC (International Student Identification Card), most meals, program excursions and health insurance.

Participants should budget approximately $200-$300 for pre-departure vaccinations and medications. Additionally, approximately $150 should be budgeted for textbooks and other required course materials.Daily breakfast and a number of other meals, as well as most expenses related to course activities are included in the program price. Participants should budget $250 - $300 for personal expenses and meals not included in the program price, as well as additional funds for souvenirs , etc. based on personal spending habits.

All prices are subject to change in the event of unanticipated increases in airfares, monetary exchange rates or other changes in program costs. In some cases, program items may be deleted in lieu of a price increase.

ACCOMMODATIONS & MEALS

Participants in the Belize Anthropology Program reside in hotel accommodations. Housing is based primarily on multi-bedded rooms. Most meals are included in the program price.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE & DEADLINES

Applicants are encouraged to apply well in advance of the February 22, 2013 application deadline, as priority is given to early applications. Applications submitted on or before February 8, 2013 receive a $100 deduction in the program price, reflected in a reduced application fee, due at time of application.

• Application Fee: $200 if received on or before February 8, 2013; $300 for applications received after February 8, 2013.

Application fees, which must be paid by credit or debit card at time of application, serve as a deposit toward the overall program price.

• First Payment: $1600 due on March 8, 2013.

• Final Payment: $1595 due on April 5, 2013.

Shortly after online submission of both the application fee and the first portion of the application, and following online approval by the local CCSA Campus Representative, all applicants will receive an application approval email and will then have access to the post-approval portion of the application. Students from non-consortium schools will receive instruction during the online application process for supplementary application requirements. An official letter of acceptance into the program will be sent electronically approximately three weeks after the program application deadline.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The following is a description of the course of study offered for this CCSA program. Applicants may register for courses offered by professors from any member institution. Students are encouraged to email faculty to learn more about the classes. Before applying for any course, refer to the course description regarding prerequisites. Course prerequisite(s) must be completed, or where applicable waived by the course instructor, prior to the program's departure date.

ANTHROPOLOGY

Ethnographic Field School in Belize

This course immerses students in Belizean culture and trains them in contemporary anthropological field methods. Students will gain valuable research skills to apply anthropology in their future careers (e.g., applied anthropology), develop an appreciation for Belizean cultural diversity and further their personal growth. While in Belize, students will be primarily engaged in guided ethnographic fieldwork. Students will learn about the local culture by doing participant-observation and conducting ethnographic interviews in a community-based project. Potential research topics include, but are not limited to: economic, social, political and kinship systems as well as the cultural constructions of identity, race, gender, religion and art.
