AN IRISH EXPERIENCE IN GALWAY

Fairfield University is pleased to offer this special on-site experience of Ireland and its culture. Through a combination of course work at the NationalUniversity of Ireland, Galway (NUIG), field trips, and special events, the program offers insight into Irish literature, history, religion, archaeology, architecture, folklore, geology, music, and film and provides an enriching experience that goes beyond the classroom.

Galway is located on the west coast of Ireland at the mouth of the Corrib River. It has grown from a medieval core of narrow streets into an energetic cathedral and university city. Charming and laid-back, yet cutting-edge, Galway is the home of the Druid Theatre Company and is a center of literary, theatrical, and artistic pursuits. Galway has a population of 80,000 and is one of Europe's fastest growing cities. With an enrollment of over 17,000 students, NUIG contributes significantly to Galway's rich cultural and social life.

EN 369 An Introduction to Irish Writers and Literature

Professors from NUIG will offer a series of lectures to familiarize students with the historical and cultural background of Irish writers. With literature as the main focus, the students study writers such as Yeats, Synge, O'Casey, and Joyce. The lectures will also include the famine and emigration, Irish folklore, traditional music, and film. The student's academic performance while abroad, both in terms of written assignments and classroom participation,will significantly affect the final grade. Students are required to submit two writing assignments, one at the end of the first week of the course and the other four weeks after the completion of the course.

This English course fulfills the third course of the English core requirement at Fairfield University.

A cumulative GPA of 2.8 is required.

Program Includes

  •  Three undergraduate Fairfield University credits
  •  Accommodations at a student-friendly hostel in the center of Galway (triple or quad occupancy)
  •  Welcome and farewell dinners
  • Field trip/excursion transportation and entry fees

    Airfare is not included.
