Overview





The Cornell Nepal Study Program is a pioneering joint venture between Cornell University and Tribhuvan National University of Nepal initiated in 1993. Courses are taught in English at the program facility and the main Tribhuvan campus in the medieval town of Kirtipur, near Kathmandu, by Nepalese faculty from the Tribhuvan University Departments of Botany and Sociology/Anthropology. CNSP is the first and only study abroad program in Nepal to draw together students from American universities to live and study with Nepalese peers in residential program houses.

Location





Nepal offers a splendid venue for a study abroad program in a developing country. The geographical diversity of Nepal ranges
from the sub-tropical Terai region to the mountain regions of the north. Nepal's amazing geographic diversity has created equally amazing cultural diversity; over 50 distinct languages are spoken.

Overview

The highlight of the program is the independent field research project. Students choose research topics ranging from cultural to environmental studies. Many students focus on critical issues such as global health or economic development.

Living Arrangements




Program participants live in houses renovated as student residences.housing Following Nepalese cultural norms, men live in one residence and women in another. The Nepalese students who join the program come from various parts of the country and are paired with North American roommates. The living situation provides:

   - Nepalese food and furnishings, with conveniences like electricity, hot water, and good sanitation.
   - Computers provide e-mail and internet connections.
   - Homestays with Nepalese families become an integral part of the program experience during holidays and the study tour.

   - 2nd sem. sophomores, juniors, 1st sem. seniors, M.A. and Ph.D. candidates
   - Previous Nepali recommended (NOT required)

Application Deadline
     Fall or Year:   February 15th
     Spring:           October 15th

Costs
   Costs include tuition in Nepal, housing, all meals, orientation, the study tour, group field trips, and required excursions.

     Not included: international airfare, health insurance, mandatory vaccinations, and recreational travel. Only modest funds are needed for personal expenses.

CNSP is administered on-site in Nepal by a Resident Director with the services of an Academic Coordinator, working with Tribhuvan National University faculty. Administration in Ithaca is coordinated by Cornell Abroad with faculty involvement in the establishment of the curriculum and research program. On-site staff includes a Graduate Teaching Fellow and Residential Coordinator.
