Program Description:

Teaching Practicum in France

Montpellier, France Study in this cultured university city with a centuries-old history of intellectual advances and social tolerance and complete your teaching practicum in a French school.

PRACTICA
Completing your teaching practicum in Montpellier, you will be fully integrated into the work life in the city, developing relationships with your students, their families, and other teachers at your school. Placements can be in a variety of school settings, working with children ages 3–18. Placements in Special Education and French as a Second Language are also available.

Faculty

Françoise Defrecheux-Chaton is the on-site director. She and her staff provide housing arrangements, an in-country orientation, academic advising, and on-going support during the program. She has coordinated this program for many years and has taught at US and French institutions. A team of additional on-site staff provide support to participants and organize a variety of cultural activities.

About This Program

Study at the University of Montpellier, founded in 1289 and one of the oldest universities in the world. Designed in partnership with the University of Minnesota’s College of Education and Human Development, this program is designed to meet the rigorous standards of the Minnesota Teaching Licensure requirements. Coursework is based on University of Minnesota syllabi, carefully adapted to reflect the French educational environment, and taught by local faculty.

Homestays provide a vital connection to the local culture and social life, as well as the opportunity to experience French daily life. Host families provide breakfast and dinner during the week and all meals on the weekend. For more independent students, traditional French apartments, the Observatoire student residence, and dormitories are available.

Three excursions are included each term to introduce you to the unique character of southern France. In addition, the program’s social and administrative assistants organize activities to familiarize you with the city and provide you with opportunities to meet French students. Optional longer trips at an extra cost may also be organized by the program. Past trips have included skiing in the Alps and a trip to Barcelona. You can also participate in local clubs that offer activities such as skiing, hiking, and photography.
