Program Description:

The incredible city of Cape Town is rich in history, culture and natural beauty.

However, there are still many people living in poverty and GVI is working in townships to offer orphans and disadvantaged children educational and sports opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them.

Situated just outside Stellenbosch and 45 minutes from Cape Town is a township where there is a sanctuary for children who are in desperate need of educational enhancement. This volunteer project involves providing a safe, fun and creative environment for these children, giving them the opportunity to develop to their full potential.

From this location we offer short-term volunteering starting from 2 weeks. We also offer internships which would include one-on-one mentoring and training by expert GVI staff and on longer durations can lead to job placements.

We can offer a combination of community development programs ranging from sports and surfing, to healthcare initiatives and education and tutoring.

Volunteers can expect the following highlights on this program depending on their area of focus:
  • Assist teachers and GVI staff to run sports lessons at the township schools. Running general physical education classes or teaching specific sports like football, netball, cricket, tennis, athletics and rugby
  • Help run our surf club. This involves giving the children surf lessons and teaching them about how to care for their coastal environment
  • Setting up and running educational workshops on general health and hygiene practices. These are aimed at child-carers, teachers, children and their parents. Be directly involved in setting up and implementing these workshops to create a fun and interactive, informal environment.
  • Ensure that these communities will be better prepared to care for and protect their young children from general illness and will offer advice on how to live in a healthy environment.
  • Facilitate and conduct educational workshops which will include a combination of lectures, stories, interactive games, activities, drama and role plays. Some of the topics you would cover will include: General hygiene practice, Healthy food and its importance, The importance of exercise and some examples, Common illnesses and their symptoms
  • Planning and implementing a project which uses educational games, song and dance, arts and crafts, gross and fine motor co-ordination and storytelling to allow these children to have fun while learning and developing at the same time.
  • Optional side trips are available to the likes of Robben Island, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Cape Town wildlife safari and wine tasting in Stellenbosch, to name but a few!
You will be able to book your side trips on arrival in Cape Town. For those traveling onwards there is easy access to the Garden Route and cheap domestic flights to Kruger National park from Cape Town.
