Amman is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a nearly 4,000 year-old history of civilization. The Ammonites, Assyrians, Persians, Macedonian Greeks, Romans, Ottomans, Byzantines, and Umayyads are just some of the contributors to the ancient culture and modern influence of the diverse city.

Built on top of seven hills, the climate is pleasantly mild all year-round. In addition to the weather and rich history, Jordan's central location has made it's capital a hub for commerce and trade, and it's democratic government has long had a tradition of welcoming refugees and immigrants.  All of these factors have transformed Amman in the last century from a quaint sleepy town to the multicultural multi-denominational city it is today.

Based in the city of Amman, Lexia in Jordan exposes students to the complex political landscape of the region from this modern Middle Eastern metropolis. The Lexia program introduces students to the language, history, politics, economics, arts, and culture of Jordan. Coursework, language training, excursions, and independent projects help students to understand the local culture and confront issues facing this country. The program strongly supports interaction and dialogue between Lexia participants and Jordanian faculty.  To this end, local faculty are involved with the program from the very beginning, giving the participants immediate and direct access to the culture. Intensive Arabic language training at the beginning is provided, thereby helping students develop the skills and confidence to live and study in Jordan. Prior knowledge of Arabic is recommended, but not required; courses will be offered at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced level with an option to continue beyond the required hours mid-way through the program. Social and academic encounters with Jordanians in addition to organized field trips contribute to a greater understanding of the country and its role in the politics of the Middle East.
