Paris is your classroom! Meet for class at the Orsay museum to discuss 19th century art and architecture or tour the Goutte d’Or neighborhood while learning about French multiculturalism. For three weeks, students will study an interdisciplinary topic of their choosing with near daily site visits, guest speakers and field trips around the city for an up-close field study of the subject. Outside of class, join the cohort for diverse cultural activities and day trips. Choose to live with local students in a residence or live with a host family.

- Power, Beauty and Revolution: 19th Century Art and Architecture in the Paris Metropole: In this course, use the material culture of Paris and its artistic heritage to examine the major artistic movements of the 19th century as well as to investigate the relationship between art, society and politics. Critically engage with the surroundings and connect what one sees in Paris – whether a statue, a building, or a painting – to larger artistic currents and historical phenomena. Most sessions will take place outdoors or in museums to enable students to learn and analyze art and architecture directly in front of it.
- Urban Identities, Popular Culture and French Multiculturalism: Explore France’s popular culture and multicultural urban identities, in particular those relating to hip-hop, to take a closer look at questions that concern the construction of citizenship, nationhood, self & other, cultural memory, and social/racial justice. Attend performances, talks, workshops and participate in a variety of informal and formal events to study how local people learn about, think about, talk about and navigate Paris and its immediate outskirts. Our guests feature urban dancers, emcees, community organizers and educators, who play active roles in the development of urban culture in France, and the Paris region in particular.
Each course incorporates site visits, guest speakers, and field trips for a hands-on learning experience. All courses are taught in English and receive four credits. Access the syllabi on our website.

Homestay
Our most popular option, APA carefully matches each student to a host family through a detailed housing questionnaire. Only one student is matched per host family and is provided with a private bedroom with linens, access to common areas including the kitchen, daily breakfast and five dinners per week, weekly laundry and WiFi.
Student Residence
A student residence or foyer is a dorm-style building for university students and young professionals under the age of 26. A five-minute walk from the APA center, the foyer provides furnished, single bedrooms with a private bathroom and access to a common area and communal kitchen. Daily breakfast and five dinners per week and weekly laundry are included.
Eligibility
The program is open to students with freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate level class standing and a minimum 3.0 GPA.
