Global Health in Bolivia (Tarija)

Nestled in southern Bolivia near the Argentine border, Tarija is known for its temperate climate, vibrant colonial architecture, and proximity to wine country. Bolivia has expanded access to primary healthcare, but many rural and indigenous communities still face barriers due to resources. This program offers participants the chance to learn from local health professionals through clinical rotations in regional hospitals and community health centers serving both urban and rural populations.

Through observational rotations in community clinics, public hospitals, and a leading Chagas Disease clinic, participants learn from local professionals and witness the realities of care in resource-limited settings. Students gain insights into diseases like parasitosis, tuberculosis, and Chagas, and shadow providers during patient consultations, lab work, and outreach efforts, deepening understanding of both clinical and community-based responses.

Become immersed in Bolivian culture and language through conversational and medical Spanish classes while living with a local family in Tarija. CFHI participants may also organize weekend trips to nearby destinations, the Valle de los cóndores and waterfalls in Coimata.

About the organization: Child Family Health International (CFHI) is a United Nations–recognized nonprofit that offers immersive, community-based Global Health Education Programs for students and emerging professionals.
