Global Health in South Africa (Durban)

Durban, located in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province of South Africa, is a vibrant coastal city and the heartland of Zulu culture. As South Africa’s third most populous city, Durban boasts a unique blend of cultural richness, subtropical climate, and historical significance. Since the end of apartheid in 1994, the country has made concerted efforts to expand access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunity—particularly for underserved populations. Kwa-Zulu Natal was once the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1990s, and while the epidemic’s effects are still felt today, the region has also been a ground for innovation in prevention, treatment, and health education. However, the dual burden of infectious diseases like HIV and TB, alongside non-communicable diseases, continues to strain South Africa’s healthcare infrastructure.

CFHI’s program in Durban offers participants a unique opportunity to explore South Africa’s evolving public health landscape through clinical and community-based experiences. Participants will observe healthcare delivery in a range of settings, including a tertiary-level public hospital, private clinics, a hospice, and NGOs. Clinical rotation opportunities may include pediatrics, internal medicine, and surgery, allowing students to gain a broad understanding of the health challenges and disparities shaped by social determinants and historical inequities. By engaging with healthcare professionals and local organizations, participants gain valuable insights into the ongoing efforts to strengthen care in resource-constrained environments and improve population health in a post-apartheid context.

Become immersed in local culture by staying with a homestay family and exploring local Apartheid museums, food and craft markets, touring the breathtaking Drakensberg mountain region and enjoying other sites of historical and cultural interest.
