Internship Details
Women’s education in Guatemala faces various challenges, particularly for rural and Indigenous girls, who have lower literacy rates and may receive fewer years of schooling. Disparities persist, yet Women’s Education initiatives seek to unlock and maximize the potential of women. Women’s Education internships provide scope to learn, contribute and drive transformational change.
In Guatemala, the large majority of indigenous women and girls live in poverty. Especially in more rural parts of the country, it can be difficult for them to access a comprehensive education. Women’s Education internships take place around Lake Atitlan, a predominantly Mayan region - approximately two and a half hours from Antigua.
Interns are able to collaborate with local organizations, committed to the education, cultural identity, and socioemotional development of women, who form such important roles within their families and communities. In particular, interns with a background in psychology and social work can make a valuable contribution, as can those able to help with the design of diverse educational resources.
This type of internship program requires participants who are proactive, open minded, adaptable, and willing to assist where it’s most needed. A degree of flexibility is paramount, as the priorities and immediate needs of the NGOs can vary greatly from day to day, therefore causing the tasks assigned to interns to change frequently as well.
Alongside this practical learning experience, this is a unique opportunity to develop cultural intelligence, build confidence, and enhance Spanish language skills. Challenge yourself to develop cultural sensitivity in diverse contexts, where resources are limited, and creativity is crucial.
Your experience will be influenced by your own level of studies, knowledge, and Spanish speaking proficiency. The duration of your internship also shapes what you’ll gain, with longer placements offering deeper immersion.
Typical Schedule: Monday to Friday, 20 - 30 hours per week.
