About this trip
This immersive 10-day study tour is designed to give Communication Sciences & Disorders students an insider’s look at how speech-language services are delivered in Ireland and Scotland—two countries known for their public health systems, language diversity, and inclusive education. Through academic site visits, cultural experiences, and guided discussions, students will gain meaningful insight into service provision for individuals with communication needs across different age groups and settings. You'll explore how SLPs and educators work together in government agencies, schools, and nonprofits to support diverse learners and communities. From the historic streets of Dublin to the cultural heart of Edinburgh, students will walk away with a broader perspective on global communication practices, a deeper sense of cultural humility, and inspiration for their future careers.

This is a non-clinical academic study tour. While no clinical work or direct observation hours are included, students will:
- Attend academic site visits and learn directly from professionals in the field
- Gain exposure to speech and language service models in schools, healthcare and community programs
- Participate in guided group discussions and cultural debriefs with Therapy Abroad facilitators
- Reflect on systems of access, inclusion, and cultural influences in communication care
- Sample visits include: ASPIRE Dublin or similar community programs, Irish Learning Support Association, Talking Mats Social Enterprise (Stirling, Scotland), and Autism Initiatives Scotland.
Learning Outcomes
Gain firsthand insight into the healthcare and education systems of Ireland and Scotland while exploring how culture, language, and societal values shape public health and speech therapy services. This experience deepens your understanding of culturally responsive practices and equips you with globally relevant skills to strengthen your graduate school applications and career readiness. You’ll also dive deep into the culture of these countries. On this trip you will have the chance to:
- Understand the norms, languages, and healthcare and education systems of Ireland & Scotland
- Learn about public health and speech therapy services in both countries
- Identify culturally appropriate and sustainable evaluation and treatment techniques
- Explore how local cultures influence assessment, intervention, and caregiver training
