GEI STUDY ABROAD AND INTERNSHIPS Transformational Programs in Africa and Southeast Asia
Entrepreneurship • Global Engineering • Global Health • Global Mental Health • Sustainable Development ENTREPRENEURSHIP & SOCIAL INNOVATION Rwanda, South Africa, Thailand, Vietnam
GEI's Entrepreneurship & Social Innovation track immerses students in dynamic environments where local changemakers address real community challenges through creative, market-based solutions. Participants explore the social entrepreneurship ecosystem through field visits, collaborative workshops, and applied projects with small enterprises and community partners. The experience emphasizes ethical innovation, human-centered design, and reciprocal learning, enabling students to develop practical skills while gaining insight into how entrepreneurship drives sustainable development in Africa and Southeast Asia.
The Global Engineering track offers students hands-on experience applying engineering principles in real-world, community-based contexts. Through site visits, professional engagement, and technical field exercises, participants learn how engineering solutions intersect with culture, development priorities, and environmental realities. Students collaborate with local experts to examine infrastructure systems, renewable energy initiatives, water and sanitation projects, and innovative technologies designed for low-resource settings. The program fosters problem-solving, cross-cultural competence, and a deeper understanding of engineering’s role in global equity.
GEI’s Global Health track introduces students to public health challenges and community-driven solutions across diverse cultural and socioeconomic settings. Participants engage with local health professionals, public institutions, and grassroots organizations to examine topics such as health systems strengthening, disease prevention, maternal and child health, and environmental health. Through fieldwork, seminars, and reflective practice, students gain applied skills while developing a holistic understanding of health equity and global collaboration. The program emphasizes responsible engagement, cultural humility, and ethical learning.
The Global Mental Health track provides students with a rare opportunity to explore community-based mental health systems and culturally grounded approaches to psychological well-being. Working alongside local clinicians, educators, and community organizations, participants study topics such as stigma, trauma-informed care, youth mental health, and psychosocial support in low-resource environments. Field visits and applied learning experiences highlight the importance of capacity building, ethical practice, and cultural context in mental health service delivery. Students leave with broader global awareness and practical insight into mental health equity.
GEI’s Sustainable Development track introduces students to the interconnected social, economic, and environmental dimensions of development in rapidly changing regions. Participants engage with community leaders, NGOs, government representatives, and local experts to examine sustainable agriculture, conservation strategies, climate resilience, and community planning. Through field-based learning and collaborative reflection, students gain a grounded understanding of sustainability challenges and culturally informed solutions. The program equips participants with analytical tools and global perspectives relevant to careers in development, policy, and environmental stewardship.
GEI’s Global Custom Internships offer students the opportunity to gain practical, career-aligned experience with trusted local partners across Africa and Southeast Asia. Each internship is tailored to the student’s academic background, professional goals, and timeline, providing meaningful placement opportunities within NGOs, community organizations, social enterprises, clinics, or technical institutes. With structured supervision and cultural orientation, interns contribute to ongoing projects while developing global skills, professional confidence, and a nuanced understanding of ethical engagement in international settings.
Global Clinical Internships provide students in health-related disciplines with supervised exposure to clinical environments in non-traditional global settings. Interns shadow healthcare professionals, participate in clinical observations, and engage in health education activities appropriate to their training level. Placements emphasize cultural sensitivity, ethical practice, and learning rather than direct patient care. Students gain insight into health systems, resource challenges, and community-based approaches to care, enhancing their understanding of global health equity and strengthening their future clinical preparation.
