As an internship student, you'll enroll in an internship seminar. Your 15 hours per week interning, combined with the seminar, earns you real work experience and academic credit.

During your semester in Madrid, you'll combine academic coursework with a professional internship, completing 4–5 courses and earning a total of 12–15 U.S. semester credits.

Your credits break down across three components, all designed to work together:

  • 3 U.S. credits for the required Intensive Spanish Language course at Expanish Madrid
  • 3 U.S. credits from your internship placement and related coursework
  • 6-9 U.S. credits from content courses at the Expanish Study Center. See courses on our program page here.

Internship and content courses are taught in English. The Spanish language course focuses on practical, professional communication. All Madrid internship students also complete a for-credit Internship Seminar to reflect on their experience and strengthen career readiness.

Our Internship Program Coordinator matches you to a placement based on your goals and interests. Fields commonly available in Madrid include:

  • Open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good academic standing
  • No prior Spanish required, our internships place students in English-speaking roles, with additional options for students with stronger Spanish
  • Internship hours vary depending on host organization and placement schedule, typically 15 hours per week
  • Full-time enrollment across internship and Expanish coursework required
  • Official transcripts issued for all coursework completed
